Breaking Black: Alchemy, Colour and a Collection

Artist Nicole Collins has been invited to organize an exhibition for the McMaster Museum of Art. She is using two of her own paintings and the colour sequences of alchemy as a framework for her selections from the Levy Collection.

Iza Mokrosz:
Colouring Outside the Lines

I will be discussing two bodies of work from 2001; Trace; and Ice Rink. Both works look at fragmented gaming floors and the coloured lines that designate rules and boundaries upon them. The pieces focus on colour but omit its intent at ordering.

Bio
Iza Mokrosz is a multi disciplinary artist and educator. Her practice includes photography, drawing and painting, performance, video, sculpture and installation. Both an immigrant and expatriate, Iza’s work explores ideas of displacement, identity and language. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, England and the US. She has taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design University since 2003.

Judith Tinkl:
Playing with Colour

I have chosen to show a series of works starting in 1994 which specifically explore various colour effects: First an arrangement of structures that can be rotated to reveal different colours, second a work which changes when it is rotated, an exploration of visual mixing, aftereffects, and finally a multiple tiled work which changes every time it is installed.

Bio
Judith Tinkl has been a fibre artist for over forty years. She was a faculty member and Associate Professor at OCAD for 19 years and an Assistant Dean for eight. She retired in 2009.  That year her work was shown in Unity and Diversity at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Korea and at the Fibre Festival in Oakville where she was a juror. She had a one man show at the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville in 2010, at the Lindsay Gallery and the Campus Gallery at Georgian College in 2011 and at the Esplanade Gallery in Medicine Hat in 2012. As well as exhibiting and teaching she has been active in many crafts organizations over the years.
