From Dr Javier Romero AIC Vice President & Chair of the AIC Judd Award Committee: As chairman of the Judd Award Committee I have the honour to announce that the winner of the AIC Deane B. Judd Award 2013 is Professor Dr. Roy S. Berns.

He is the author of the third edition of “Billmeyer and Saltzman’s Principles of Color Technology,” as well as an author of over 200 publications. Berns’ main research focus is using color and imaging sciences for the visual arts, particularly paintings, including: 3-D imaging and computer-graphics rendering; spectral-based imaging, archiving, and reproduction; pigment mapping; visible-fluorescence imaging, colorant selection for inpainting, digital rejuvenation, and image rendering as a function of object and reproduction sizes. This research is collaborative with the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. The principal sponsor is the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. See www.art-si.org. At RIT, Berns developed both M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in Color Science and established the Macbeth-Engel, Grum, and Saltzman Fellowships for graduate students engaged in color science research.

Roy, I want to take this opportunity to offer my sincere congratulations to you upon receiving the Judd Award 2013. This prestigious award is a well-deserved acknowledgement of your work.

Obituary
Dr. Ir. Pieter Walraven (1930–2013)
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Peter Walraven, Judd Awardee 1991 (together with Johannes Vos). He co-organized the AIC Meeting on Colour metrics, The Helmholtz Memorial Symposium in Driebergen, The Netherlands, 1-3 September 1971. In 2011 Pieter Walraven sent me his copy of the Proceedings (with a digitalized version on CD) edited by Johannes J. Vos, Ludwig F. C. Friele, and Pieter L. Walraven (Soesterberg, The Netherlands: Institute for Perception TNO, 1972. My deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends.
